Subtitling & Closed Captioning
The preparation and encoding of subtitles has become an increasingly important component of the video entertainment industry. Broadcasters have a duty to cater for the needs of those viewers with hearing difficulties and program-makers (both TV and DVD) frequently need to offer multi-lingual subtitles. Softel's Swift range of subtitle products is founded on the dual premises that the cost of subtitling should be minimised and that subtitles should be encoded reliably and to open standards (wherever they exist). One way to reduce cost is to make use of state-of-the-art technology - and as an example, Swift is now offered with automated 'text to speech' alignment (TiGo) which unburdens the subtitler from having to timecode each subtitle manually.


Digital TV
One of the ways that Digital TV operators can differentiate their product from conventional analogue TV is by 'enhancing' the viewing experience. The term 'Enhanced TV' has thus evolved in parallel with the roll-out of digital TV and is used to describe the different ways in which TV programmes, or complete channels, may be accompanied with additional on-screen information or the opportunity to 'interact' with the video content in some way.
